My Grandma Gracie used to tell me if something was sh**, call it sh**, (she had a way with words, that lady). Well, I am coming to you today from what is my opinion, a warm, steaming pile.

I’m speaking of the continuing use of dispersants as a remedy for oil spills, as is part of the National Contingency plan - meaning this affects you, wherever you live. God forbid an “incident” of oil leakage in your local waters should occur, even at much smaller amount than we have seen in the Gulf, because there is a good possibility they are going to spray toxic chemicals on it.

Consider this a warning to you and your community, if that should happen there is a good chance that a portion of your population will get sick, there is a chance that some may die.

I know that sounds scary, even fatalistic, and I wish it weren’t true. But based on what we are seeing here in the Gulf, it is.

You may not have heard, in fact you probably haven’t, but contrary to the Center for Disease control’s website, found here
http://emergency.cdc.gov/gulfoilspill2010/2010gulfoilspill/dispersants_coastal_residents.asp , which states that “most people in coastal areas are not coming into direct contact with oil spill dispersants,” we are.

I guess since the CDC hasn’t been on the ground here really since September 2010, they may not know, but one needn‘t look farther than the citizen investigative journalist photos of Charles Taylor, Laurel Lockemy, Denise Rednour, Shirley Tillman, Betty Doud, Mac Mackenzie, Lorrie Williams, and others, to know that.

The page, which doesn’t seem to have been updated in quite a while, goes on to advise visitors to, “stay away from cleanup activities.”

Now that’s a funny thing to say, since the oil and dispersant toxic cocktail still trespasses our beaches and marshes on a daily basis. How many photos have we seen, from the summer of 2010 until now, of tourists sunbathing and playing with clean-up workers in Tyvek suits working within feet from them?

I have yet to understand how a chemical can be innocent until proven guilty, but that seems to be the case concerning the use of chemical dispersants in our waters. At least that’s what the government and BP would like us to believe.

While they keep telling us that there is not enough information to tell whether people really are sick from the use of dispersants, it is a hard sell to coastal men, women and children who are still suffering headaches, rashes, seizures, respiratory issues, “brain fog,” heart palpitations, abdominal pain, miscarriages, eye troubles, mental health issues, ect.

It goes on to say, “Since the 1970s, it has been known that application of dispersants to oil spills increases toxicity by increasing oil and hydrocarbon exposure to water column species.” I’m no scientist, but I figure it’s safe to assume that an increase in toxicity to one species, is an increase in toxicity to all species.

The truth is that they knew that these symptoms may occur to a part of the human population as early as 81 days into the spill. According to this report by Keith Olbermann,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ew7U5imIRM, BP had released a report at that time, “finding that 20 percent of offshore (clean-up) workers and 15 percent of near shore (clean-up) workers had 10 parts per million of the dispersant solvent called 2-Butoxyethanol, twice the toxicity limit of 5 parts per million dictated by the CDC’s National Institute on Occupation Health and Safety.”

And what would you suppose is listed as potential symptoms from 2-Butoxyethanol on the OSHA website found here

The page reads that potential maladies include, “eye, nose throat and skin irritation, cough, hemolytic, hematuria, anemia, central nervous system depression, dizziness, drowsiness, lightheadedness, unconsciousness; headache, vomiting; pulmonary edema; eye redness, pain, blurred vision; liver and kidney damage;… abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea; metabolic acidosis..”

The site further explains that this one ingredient can affect the organs, “eye, skin, respiratory system, CNS, hematopoietic system, blood, kidneys, liver (and) lymphoid system.”

Not sure it is right to do so, but I wish that 2-butoxyethanol was all we had to worry about. According to environmental law firm, Earth Justice, 5 of the 57 ingredients found in the dispersants being used in the Gulf of Mexico to combat oil spills have been linked to cancer.

Those ingredients, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request regarding Corexit 9500 and 9527 (Nalco/Exxon) include:

- Amides, coco, N,N-N-bis(hydroxyethyl)

- Cyclohexene, 1-methyl-4-(1-mthylethenyl) -, (4R)

- Ethanol, 2-butoxy

- Petroleum distillates, hydrotreated light

Symptoms for the last of these five carcinogens include “dizziness, headache, nausea, drowsiness, and unconsciousness and prolonged inhalation of high concentrations may damage respiratory symptoms.” For more information please go to the link,

I’m just wondering how many symptom lists a person’s symptoms have to appear on before they are taken seriously.

But don’t worry, perhaps in a decade we will know the truth. The NIEHS’ Gulf Study is under way now. And as one Mississippi clean-up worker and resident explained, “Ten years from now we should have some idea of what we died of.” For more info, or to sign up, please go to nihgulfstudy.org.

We tend to agree with Earthjustice attorney, Marianne Engelman Lado’s statement, “The testing can’t be done in the moment of the disaster. It has to be done ahead of time..”

If there is a clean spot in the manure pile it comes from H.R. 3562 Ban Toxic Dispersants Act of 2011. This bill, found here
http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h3562/text, would ban dispersants until further testing can be done to prove that the use of these chemicals is safe for humanity and the ecosystem, (which in my opinion, is one in the same).

Hello All,

I wish to commend you on your continuing work on behalf of the people still being affected by the 2010 BP Oil catastrophe. As you know, on a daily basis the lifeless corpses of birds, fish, turtles and dolphins wash up at some 10 times the usual mortality rate. Thick, black, sticky, toxic oil continues to come in, often accompanied by a bubbly, peanut butter colored dispersant/oil cocktail.

Our fisherman are not being paid fairly, if at all. Many are literally hungry, and even more have had to face the devastation of losing either, or both, their business and their home.

Our oil workers are no more safe now than they were on April 19, 2010, as there has been no definitive legislation to protect them, let alone to provide a safety net for the family of those who will continue to be injured or lose their lives, providing drug to an addicted nation.

While BP pays trillions to the national corporate media to blatantly lie, and tell you that they are, “making it right,” we have at least 2,400 confirmed cases of petro-chemically poisoned men, women and children - unfortunately, that number grows every single day.

Below is a listing of important information concerning the continuing need here. We ask that, as much as you are able, you continue to take action on our behalf for your and our combined future.

H.R. 3562 - BAN TOXIC DISPERSANT ACT OF 2011 - “To amend the Federal Water Pollution Control Act with respect to the use of dispersants..”

Please support this bill, which is sponsored by Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Rep. Timothy Bishop (D-NY) and Rep. Raul Greave (D-AZ) - Please call and thank them, and further pledge your support of their efforts.

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee approved the bill in September 2011, setting the stage for a senate vote, although to date the bill seems to be just sitting in wait.

A REGIONAL CITIZEN’S ADVISORY COUNCIL was not included in the Restore Act, but we feel it is essential to have regional oversight of the fossil fuel industry and it’s obvious impacts upon our waters and people. We are dismayed that within 3 months, the people of Alaska had such a committee in place - funded by the industry, while over 16 months after the worst environmental disaster in American history, we do not.

HEALTH ISSUES - As you know, many have found themselves facing health related issues stemming from the continued use of toxic dispersants in the Gulf. Recently Gulf Change initiated a week long event calling for a heroic effort on behalf of the children and families of those now suffering. For those of you who wish to join us in going farther in an attempt to firmly place the injustice of our situation in the court of public opinion. We ask that whenever you see a faulty report, please contact the writer and the vehicle of that writing (e.g. The New York Times), directly with relative truthful information.

Research the other advertisers in that source and write them a letter explaining how you find it hard to buy from a company who associates itself with a faulty news source that acts upon the whim and money of a foreign corporation that is responsible for the devastation now being faced on America’s Gulf Coast.
5.) Add your own idea here.

Also, we ask that you praise and support well written and reality based articles and their sources; and more so, Gulf based citizen journalists and bloggers.

Remember: Although BP has deep pockets, and we do not, with a definitive grass-roots orchestration, there is little doubt that the tide of ignorance can be overturned. It is just going to take team work and commitment.

THE TRIAL OF THE CENTURY - February 27, 2012, marks the beginning of what, some folks say, may be a year long trial concerning the disaster, which will be covered to some extent by media all over the world.

The case, which will take place in New Orleans in the courtroom of federal judge Carl Barbier, will be divided along 3 phases.

- Phase 1 will consist of the accident itself, with regards to who is to blame, BP, Halliburton, Transocean or others?

- Phase 2 addresses the spill, including the volume leaked.

- Phase 3 covers damages to ecosystem and civil penalties. It is imperative to the cause that there is a large and demanding roar of public outcry prior to this last phase of the trial. We must make it known that we will not allow BP off the hook. The truth in our only weapon, we must yield it unsparingly.

Judgment for all three phases will not be announced until the end of Phase 3, which has been speculated to be followed by a broad range of appeals.

There has been rumors of a settlement offered by BP for some ridiculous amount. WE MUST NOT LET THAT HAPPEN. It is in the discovery phase of any trial that the truth comes out. We must make it known that we want to see our day in court. If there is any hope of judiciary justice for those who have been affected, BP, (and others), must face inquiry and consequences regarding their actions to date.

Lastly, we would like to share that we stand in full support of THE BLUE BULB PROJECT. The initiative begun by Paul Grogan, “is a way for activists and non-activists to unite and show support of clean water and blue skies.” Participants are asked to put a blue light or blue ribbon in front of their homes or on their person, to remind others that the disaster is not over, and to show your support of America‘s Gulf Coast.

That‘s all for now, but we do ask that you remember that we did not vote to become the sacrifice zone for energy production in the United States. We did not ask for 11 of our brothers to be taken from us, and 17 more horribly injured. We never sought to invest in a system that values the profit of a few, over the lives of any. And we will continue to seek justice for our people, our ecosystem and our unique combination of cultures.

Above all, we would like you to know that we value you as heroes to your people, this is your coast too, no matter where you live. And we wish to thank you for keeping the Coast in your prayers, and thoughts; and most importantly, on your lips and by the service of your hands.

Occupy Cleveland in joint effort to stop eviction

On Thursday morning, December 15th, at 10 am, Christine and Steve Cart and their two sons, Stephen and Shaun, will be forced from their home by the Sheriff’s department. Christine and her family, who live at 7234 State Route 45 in Orwell, OH, have been fighting to stay in their home since 2008. Occupy Cleveland, working in conjunction with Occupies Ashtabula and Youngstown, will take a stand with the Cart family, against the powers who wish to remove them from their home, just before the holidays.

Christine Cart’s father bought their home in the early 1970’s. Christine, her husband, and their two sons, moved in with him, when he became ill. Before he passed away in 2004, they refinanced the home, with Lehman Brothers. In December 2007, they fell two payments behind and called the mortgage servicer, Aurora Loan Services, to set up a repayment plan. She received the repayment plan in February of 2008. After attempting to pay a missed tax payment, she found that Aurora Loan Services had already taken care of it. When she attempted to submit payment to Aurora, they refused and claimed a new repayment plan would have to be drawn up. When she called in April, 2008, to inquire about the new repayment plan, they told her the house had gone into foreclosure, they could no longer speak with her and she needed to hire an attorney. With no money for an attorney, Christine did all the filings herself. After a few failed attempts, she finally found the correct paperwork, but was told by the judge that she was too late and her motions were denied. She filed a Motion of Relief in early November, 2008, to challenge the scheduled sale of her home, but the judge set the hearing date for AFTER the auction date. She repeatedly filed motions to vacate the void judgement but each was denied. “I just wanted them to listen to me and they never did. It was as if Aurora, their lawyers and the judge were telling me ‘We just need you to go away so we can have your house.’” Christine told an occupier on Wednesday, while discussing her efforts. The Cart’s home was sold to Fannie Mae, at Sheriff’s auction, on November 17, 2008. Since then, Christine and her family have faced five evictions. One stay was issued when she filed a criminal complaint against Aurora, their lawyers and the presiding judge. The complaint was later dismissed. Three stays were issued due to bankruptcy filings and one is pending for Thursday, December 15th, at 10am. Christine has two appeals still pending. One is a Motion to Quiet the Title (Ashtabula County Court Case #: 2001cv330). The other is a complaint with the Office of the Comptroller of Currency.

Fannie May recently called for a suspension of evictions for the holidays, starting Monday, December 19th. Fannie Mae Executive Vice President Terry Edwards was quoted as saying "The holidays are meant for families to spend time together, especially if they've gone through the stress of financial challenges and foreclosure. No family should have to give up their home during this holiday season." Occupy Cleveland, Occupy Ashtabula and Occupy Youngstown intend to occupy the Cart’s home for as long as it takes. Said Cleveland occupier Peter Schanz, “Hard working American families haven’t been given a fair shake by the big banks or the legal system that is supposed to protect them. No family should be forced out onto the street just before the holidays and they should be allowed to stay in their home until their appeals are settled. We intend to stand our ground until there is justice.”

Avatar and The Big Fix

I saw the movie Avatar long before the 2010 BP oil spill off the coast of the Gulf of Mexico, the 2011 threat of fracking, gas extraction from shale rock and the transnational Tar Sands pipeline. The story of good and evil is Biblical: David and Goliath, Samson and Delilah, Big Oil and Gas and the rest of us and our precious wildlife, indigenous peoples and oceans. As I write wild horses are being slaughtered in the western US to make way for a gas pipeline. Manifest Destiny.

America is at a critical turning point. We seem to have lost sight of our animal nature, humanity and are in denial that borders on delusion. We are killing our planet, our wildlife and ourselves from cancer and other chemically induced terminal illnesses, by-products of oil. We are eliminating our food supply by creating dead zones from oil spills and are suffocating our oceans. Does humanity belong on the endangered species list?

Activists scramble today to make a difference as they watch politicians checkmate each other to prevent progress, health and change. One must hold a point of tension in the creative process. This is a requirement of the birthing process and all innovation. It is painful and necessary. In 2010 the men of BP prematurely closed on deep water drilling off of the Horizon rig. They cut safety corners. They ignored the danger warnings, cut off siren systems that would have warned workers that they were in trouble. These Avatar like men, heads of the project were airlifted off of the rig before it blew. Eleven men died in that explosion. Oil spilled out into the Gulf of Mexico a formerly pristine ocean with teeming marine life and it is today in the process of dying. Dolphins continue to give birth to stillborns. BP said they would make it right but have not followed through. Again. BP has a history of impatience and negligence.

Last night I saw another film, The Big Fix made by young emerging filmakers, Josh and Rebecca Tickell who bore witness to the oil spill aftermath, illnesses and coverup by nearly everyone involved in the clean up. BP erected a series of obstacles to the press and public. They buried oil, sank it with dispersants outlawed in Britain. This year they purchased islands off of the Gulf coast where most wildlife lives. The rest of us are now unable to bear witness to the continued destruction of those areas.

America has turned a dangerous corner. Just like the family members of an addict who enable a loved one to stay sick by covering up misdeeds, our government continues to enable Goliath companies like BP to behave badly and is being held hostage by men who would be kings. It is clear that our country has become a resource. Our air, water, land and people are up for auction to the highest bidder through corporate lobbies. Companies are no longer invested in our national sovereignty, security or safety. We are without protection even as we pass laws in our respective communities meant to protect us. The laws are reactive. They have been hastily put into place; a characteristic or M.O. of the oil industry. Our first amendment rights and others are violated as police use weapons seen in armies. They have been given the means to use them against nonviolent protesters. We have assuredly become The US of BP.

Which side are you on? Do you want clean air, water and a land free of the contamination of fossil fuels for your children or grandchildren ? Is it time to separate corporations and state? Please comment. Let's start a dialogue and do watch the videos below.

Philadelphia Mayor Nutter has joined ths list of U.S. mayors who have evicted peaceful occupiers fronm their encampments under the direct supervision of the federal government. Nutter told Occupy Philadelphia that they have to leave Dilworth Plaza by Sunday afternoon. So we have a federal police state mobilizing the local the Gestapo to disperse the occupation. I came home from D.C. less than a week ago. In that time:

I have seen photos of a 7-year-old with a rash all over her body - whose mother is fearful we will lose if she is not helped.

Been unable to contact a close friend, who worked clean-up on the spill, who told me before I left he was “not alright”. He had been supposed to go with us, but had lost 22 pounds in 5 days, and the doctors had no idea why. He can’t breathe, and has been told he has the lungs of a 45 year old smoker. He is in his mid twenties, and hasn’t smoked a day in his life.

I have spoken to another friend, who is a resident who lived near the spill. He has been sick for a very long time now, and wishes death to take him.

I have heard from a friend who is very near to losing her house, while not receiving one dime from Feinberg as an interim payment. He is starving her out.

I talked to a friend who is a shrimpers who said there are little to no shrimp, and he brought up oil in his net, and he has to use a inhaler 3 times every hour to breath.

There have been photos of oil and tar balls daily on my computer.

Please make plans to join us as we travel via bus from the Gulf Coast to Washington D.C. to join in solidarity with those opposing the proposed Keystone Pipeline on November 6, circling the White House and then to Protest Kenneth Feinberg and the GCCF's lack of a fair and transparent claims process, including people's health affects, on November 7.

Please note:

- Transportation will be provided via bus to those who live in the Gulf Coast States on a first come first serve basis.

- We will leave the Gulf Coast on the 4th and return on the 8th. Times are tentative, for now, please check back regularly for updates.

- To date persons in attendance will be responsible for themselves, housing and food. We are in the process of working on further funding and a possible place to stay, please check back regularly for info on this as well.

On Wednesday I drove into the city (NYC) to participate in #occupywallstreet. Disparate groups have joined the occupation since it began some weeks ago: librarians, students, Ethical Culture Society, Union Theological Society, a protest band, army vet in uniform, and others. I said hello to an African American elder at the march on the sidelines who wore a black panther pin. I met a Yippie from my generation as well. Thousands attended the rally and march. Michael Moore spoke and cheese-heads attended from Wisconsin.

This is a serious movement not to be underestimated and it is growing. Anonymous, the well known hacktivist group is supporting it online, has its back and mainstream politicians are endorsing it. Bernie Sanders and Charles Rangel are two vocal supporters.

Al Gore has suggested that we need an American Spring fashioned after the uprisings in the Middle East. Money has landed into the coffers of only 1% of our population. We are the 99%. Americans are suffering.

Families have lost their homes because of bad mortgages and students have little hope of receiving reasonable wages once they graduate from colleges. Student loan defaults will push them into bankruptcy. Unemployment is at an all time high." At will" work is not working!

The environmental movement joined the protests last night in DC with #occupystatedept after a leak was published about Tar Sands cozy relationship with it. Wikileaks continues to publish damning evidence of corruption in many of the worlds governments. Communication travels at lightening speed and worldwide. Coverups are not easy. If an Anonymous member gets arrested in the USA there are many members that live in places across the globe that are unreachable by our authorities that will help the protesters meet their goals. This is a worldwide movement for equity and solvency. The movement is by its nature organic, unpredictable, artistic, powerful and you could say spiritual; worldwide self realization of a generation.

Emergency relief funds were recently denied Vermont due to floods. Battered women's programs in another state are being threatened with closure. Tea Party hecklers were recently caught on video screaming at a man without functioning legs as they blamed him for his need for disability funds. A lack of ethics and mean spiritedness has gained traction in the United States while bi-partisan bickering keeps our government checkmated. The song about corruption in a small town from the Broadway musical Music Man comes to mind: "We've got trouble, right here in River City...".

On Facebook a cartoon is circulating that shows the Statue of Liberty being dragged away against her will by two policemen. In an early march on Wall Street NYPD lost their composure and lapsed into brutality caught on videotaped footage by protesters. Protesters state they were set up for busts and the police show videotape footage in which they warn protesters they would be arrested if they stepped into the street on the Brooklyn Bridge. #occupywallstreet started a stone's throw from Freedom Tower in Zuccotti Park, now Liberty Park where police emotions seem to be close to the surface and on the edge. Their badges read, "WTC". They look scared to me. They lost friends, rescued the living and buried the dead at the Trade Towers during 9-11. This has to be an emotional high hurdle for them.

I had not travelled to lower Manhattan since 9-11. I felt grief well up as I walked past Freedom Tower and where I lived a good part of my adult life in Tribeca. I felt an emotional swing to elation as I reached the rally in front of Town Hall where thousands of people milled about carrying signs from unions, non profit and religious organizations. Various bands and choirs made music. In that town square I felt the hope that Obama promised. I also felt fear for our country's destablization. I saw a familiar "Don't tread on me" flag, symbol for the Tea Party. My feelings ran the gamut as I walked through my old haunt.

On October 10th, Anonymous plans to attack the NYSE. Their slogan is "We are anonymous, We are legion, We do not forgive, We do not forget, Expect Us". In the name of democracy. Anonymous is sick and tired of watching America in distress just as we feel for those in totalitarian countries where uprisings have been stifled by the violence of oppressive regimes. Recently the US art world got behind a protest against China for their imprisonment of a celebrated artist. One has only to remember the young student who was shot post Iran election, beautiful Neda who became a symbol of the sinister nature of Iran's dictatorship or our own young Kent State students in the 1970's who were shot by our own National Guard.

I walked to Zuccotti Park now Liberty Park to see the encampment by the young protesters. This is a wired generation. The web was projected onto a sheet in the middle of the park where personal stories of young people in debt unfolded. Musicians strolled through in costume and drums were beaten by angry creative youth who seemed to channel indiginous peoples as shamans and as a way to the transformation of our culture as flashlit Anonymous masks emerged in the darkness. This protest is deep.
